What’s more American than watching the USA under-19 national team play football on the 4th of July? Maybe watching them win 70-7 over Austria as fireworks burst in the background.
I photographed the IFAF Under-19 World Championship tournament’s semifinal round between USA and Austria on July 4 at Burger Stadium for the Statesman.
The game itself wasn’t as impressive as I was imagining. I was expecting quite the game since both teams were composed of the best of the best under-19-year-old football players in each country. But then again, the teams hadn’t been together very long and most of them were committed to play on college teams and were trying to avoid injury. Also, I should have known the score would be somewhere near 70-7, since the game is, after all, called American football.
It still had it’s moments and it was still fun to sit in the press box editing photos with a panoramic view of fireworks popping up over Austin. I was envisioning a wide shot of the stadium with fireworks in the background, but sadly, we were pretty far away from all of the shows and the fireworks were tiny in my camera frame.
Anyway, you want to see some football pictures. No more delays…
